Ernest Evans was born on October 3rd, 1941 in Spring Gully, South Carolina, but raised in the projects of South Philadelphia. He did a private recording for Dick Clark, Clark’s wife asked Evans what his name, and he said “my friends call me ‘Chubby’.” As he had just completed a Fats Domino impression, she smiled and said, “As in Checker?” from then on, Evans would use the name “Chubby Checker”. Checker released his version of “The Twist” at the age of 18 in July 1960 and it was a nationwide smash, by 1965 “The Twist” had sold over 15 million copies!! He found further success with a succession of dance tracks. Changes in public tastes, owing mostly to the “British invasion” ended his hit making career and he spent much of the rest of the 1960s touring and recording in Europe, and continued to record through the decades. This disc has a “drill hole” otherwise is conservatively graded in VG++ condition, though the sleeve is a little tatty with a small bit of biro – Worth checking out the flip too
